Growing success for campus garden

/News Release Agency - EventsPressReleases.com/ Since the seeds were sown at the launch of Royal Holloway’s Campus Community Garden in June, green-fingered students are reaping the rewards of their hard work
with their first harvest.

With help from the College’s gardeners, an area of wasteland on campus, measuring 152 square metres, was transformed into vegetable patches ready for students to cultivate. Among the many herbs and vegetable seeds sown were courgettes, pumpkins, coriander, chives and runner beans which have blossomed into healthy organic crops for the students to enjoy.

Anna Simpson, Royal Holloway Sustainability Officer, said, “The campus allotments are blooming and it’s great to see so many students starting to harvest their first crops. The allotments have been so popular that we have started looking into setting up another allotment site on campus.”

English undergraduate Nick Stylianou, who signed up for one of the plots, says, “I would never have attempted to grow anything had it not been for these campus plots. It has been a lot easier than I thought and I like the fact you have to take responsibility over your plot and making sure it’s watered and maintained. You feel a real sense of achievement when you see the plants growing. I’ve just started to pick and eat the lettuce I’ve grown which is encouraging me to eat healthier and I’m already thinking about what I’ll be growing next.”
